| YOUR COACH
I have been coaching, mentoring and teaching all of my adult
life. By the age of 14, I was teaching dinghy sailing to
younger sea scouts on Lake Ontario. At 16, I coached in a
basketball league for 13-15 year olds. As a young adult I
coached teenage lacrosse teams in White Rock.

During undergraduate studies at McMaster University I played
Varsity Rugby, and trained on the Atlantic and Pacific
coasts as an officer in the Canadian Navy, including sailing
the famous HMCS Oriole to Alaska. I spent several years
training officer cadets in seamanship, navigation and watch
keeping – before the days of GPS and Chart Plotters when
navigation was a science and an art.
For 15 years I taught history and political science to
university students and for 20 years I worked as a Dean at
Kwantlen University mentoring and coaching faculty in a wide
variety of departments as the institution grew from a
college of a thousand students to a university of 9000.
I have also led national organizations.
You might say that coaching, mentoring and leadership are in
my blood.
So is going up the mast, something that is totally optional
for students.

Over the last 15 years I have coached or mentored a number
of sailors of varying levels of experience, skills and
knowledge. I am now formalizing this by focusing the time
freedom of retirement on coaching and mentoring sailors,
with a focus on recreational sailing and cruising.
